Storms and supply spikes can damage electrical equipment in Spanish homes. Air conditioning boards, pool heat pumps, televisions, routers, fridges and control systems are all vulnerable.

Here are the common questions homeowners ask about surge protection.

1. What is a surge protector?

A surge protector helps protect electrical equipment from sudden voltage spikes. Whole-property protection is normally fitted at the consumer unit by a qualified electrician.

2. Do homes in Spain need surge protection?

Many Costa del Sol homes benefit from it, especially properties that have already lost equipment after storms or power cuts.

3. What does it protect?

Surge protection can help protect fixed and plugged-in equipment, including air conditioning, pool plant, white goods, televisions, routers and office equipment.

4. Is unplugging equipment enough?

Unplugging can help for loose appliances, but it is not practical for fixed equipment such as air conditioning, pool pumps, heat pumps and built-in appliances.

5. Do plug-in protectors work?

They can help with individual devices, but they do not replace a properly fitted surge protection device at the consumer unit.

6. Who should install it?

Whole-property surge protection should be fitted by a registered electrician. The electrician will check the consumer unit, earthing and the type of protection needed.

7. Does insurance require it?

Some insurers may ask whether surge protection is fitted, especially after a claim. Check your policy and speak to your insurer if you are unsure.

8. Is it useful for rental properties?

Yes. Rental properties often have guests using multiple appliances, and the owner may not be nearby if equipment fails after a storm.

9. When should I ask for a survey?

Ask for a check if the property has had surge damage before, if the consumer unit is old, or if you are adding air conditioning, EV charging, pool heating or other high-value equipment.

EnviroCare can inspect the installation and advise whether surge protection should be added as part of wider electrical work.
