Closed-up Costa del Sol properties can feel damp and smell musty, especially after wet weather or long periods without ventilation.
Most modern air conditioning units can help by removing moisture from the air.
How air conditioning removes moisture
Warm, humid air passes over the cold evaporator coil inside the unit. Moisture condenses on the coil, collects in the drain tray and leaves through the condensate drain.
That is why a clean drain and clean indoor unit matter. If the drain blocks, the unit can leak inside.
Use dry mode where available
Many systems have a dry or dehumidify mode. This usually runs the fan more slowly and removes moisture without cooling the room as aggressively.
It is useful for bedrooms, spare rooms and properties that are closed for several weeks.
Do not set the room too cold
Setting the unit very low is not the best way to dry a room. A moderate temperature gives the unit time to remove moisture without making the space uncomfortable.
Timers can help if the property is used occasionally, but any unattended use should be set carefully.
When damp needs more than dry mode
Air conditioning can reduce humidity, but it will not solve leaks, rising damp, blocked ventilation or water ingress.
If a room smells musty even after dehumidifying, check the source of the moisture and arrange a service if the unit has not been cleaned recently.
